Op woensdag 8 september 2010 vond de internationale Dag van de Alfabetisering plaats. Aan deze dag werd ook in Nederland, Vlaanderen en Suriname aandacht besteed. In 's- Hertogenbosch werden, in aanwezigheid van H.K.H Prinses Laurentien en demissionair staatssecretaris Marja van Bijsterveldt, diverse initiatieven en aanpakken in de strijd tegen laaggeletterdheid belicht en besproken. Aan het einde van de dag maakte de demissionair staatssecretaris de winnaars van de nationale alfabetiseringsprijzen 2010 en de Achmea Publieksprijs bekend.
